Police broke up a wedding ceremony after it was discovered that the Hungarian bride and the Pakistani groom could not understand one another.
Sufyan Shahzad, 25, told registrar in Blackburn, Lancs, England, he had a whirlwind romance with with 30-year old Katalyn Ottlyk.
But when staff noticed that neither could understand a word the other was saying they called immigration officers, and waited until the day of the ceremony, then arrested those involved, Bolton Crown Court heard.
When Shahzad was originally interviewed after his arrest, he claimed his relationship with Ottlyk was a genuine one. But he could not give officers any personal information about his fiancée, such as where in Hungry she came from .
Prosecutors explained that Ottlyk, who was paid £1,500 for her part as the bride, had used a false identification card during the proceedings, which was later found to have been stolen from a woman in Hungary.
Ottlyk and Sahzad pleaded guilty to taking part in the fake ceremony on Jul 27 this year.
They were both sentenced to 20 months in prison.
Four months was added to Ottlyk’s term for her use of the false identification card.
