New Delhi : An alleged SIMI member has threatened to kill a Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) MLA and blow up a gurdwara, prompting police to lodge an FIR and throw a security cordon around gurdwaras in the capital.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the Rajouri Garden MLA and the general secretary of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committe, had received a call on his private number in March from Aftab, an alleged SIMI member.

"Aftab told Sirsa that Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) was furious with him for organizing the Khalsa Fateh Diwas at Red Fort in March and alleged that the event was an attempt to insult Muslims. Sirsa told him that the programme was just a get-together but Aftab, who was speaking in Urdu, did not pay heed to him," a source said.
The MLA immediately informed police, which was initially treating it as a harmless prank.
Sources said call detail records of the number from which the threat call was made has revealed that the user was in constant touch with some numbers in Dubai and the UK which are already under the radar of security agencies. The sources added that calls were also made to agencies in Delhi and Hyderabad which provide security to VIPs. This has left cops puzzled about the possible motive.
Delhi Police's special cell, which is ly probing SIMI modules, has formed a team of an ACP and two inspectors to unearth a possible "bigger conspiracy".

The phone number has become unreachable and police are raiding several places in Delhi and Punjab to nab the caller.

Police have interrogated SIMI ideologue Safdar Nagori, operatives Imtiyaz and Abu Faisal in this connection and have got some leads. Faisal, who had been brought to Delhi from Bhopal Jail, is believed to be involved in gathering funds for SIMI.
