Where was the need to celebrate Tipu's birthday in the face of widespread opposition? It would appear that after criticizing the BJP (read Modi) for being highly divisive, the Congress and gone and done something worse - just to get the votes of the Muslims!

To:

You are right. Congress has always been divisive, there is absolutely no reason to celebrate rank Islamic fanatic Tipu Sultan's birth day, he was continuity in S India, of Aurangazeb in north.
Just like a major street in Delhi named after Aurangazeb, the Congress government in Karnataka is going out of its way to celebrate Tipu's birthday , as you rightly pointed out , during Deepavali while the fellow was born 10 days later.

It is just to cause turmoil, so when two groups celebrating , clash, (let us hope and pray that will not happen despite designs of 2G Congress) then it will present another opportunity for ruling Congress to blame BJP and uphold secularism visiting Moslem bustees and offering them money. All that will be legal even though every one who gets the money , gets the message, vote for Congress. Should turmoil between two groups of revelers break out it also gives an opportunity of media crooks to blame Narendra Modi , telling the public about rising level of intolerance since Modi became PM. Actually number of riots were far , far greater during Congress rule in the states and in the Center. But who cares, not the sickulars.

Anyhow for the sake of people of Karnataka such scenario will not come to happen.

Actually it will be far better for ruling Congress , instead of celebrating Tipu Sultan's festival, use some other occasion to distribute money from Govt treasury . If they ran out of birthdays of Nehru, Gandhi , Rajiv Gandhi to dole out cash, what happened to current President of Congress party, Ms. Sonia Gandhi ? Can't they hold her birth day celebration on Deepavali and use that occasion to buy votes? That way though money will be gone down the drain, there will be less chance of clash between 'two communities'.

Remember our discussion some time ago regarding Tipu Sultan - was he a villain or a hero? Patriot or an usurper? Temple builder or temple breaker? This has been a very controversial subject indeed.

Knowing very well that the Tipu Sultan issue is an explosive topic in Karnataka, where the Kodavas of Coorg, the Catholics of Mangalore and the Hindus of Kasargod (formerly in South Kanara District, now in Kerala) still recall the forcible conversion and torture that their ancestors were subjected to by Tipu, the ruling Congress in Karnataka has pressed ahead with the birthday celebrations of Mysore's Tiger "Hazrat" Tipu Sultan today. See the government's Kannada poster below. Todays' Times of India carries a full-page ad with the same poster in English, which must have cost the government around Rs 1 crore.

The strange part is, today's date does not even match Tipu's birthday - he was born on 20th November 1750). Why celebrate it on 10th November on the occasion of Diwali? Is the Congress deliberately provoking Hindus?
